“My journey into writing started when I was 16 years old. I went to visit some friends that lived in a student accommodation in my home country, and I was speechless from the state of the accommodation. The walls, the cold, the lack of space, the communal showers, all these things deeply angered me. When I went home later that week my father told me that his journalist friend could take me on his company if I wanted to become one and teach me about the profession, but first he needed to see if I actually had any talent.

I remember sitting there thinking: “What can I write about that can make a difference?”, and all I could think of was my friends living conditions. I handed in my “piece” and with a shy voice I said: “I hope you like it.”

Less than an hour later he called my dad to let him know that he had loved my writing and that he was going to publish the piece on tomorrow’s newspaper. I was happy but not really excited. I didn’t fully realise at the time how important that was. Now I do.

That was the first moment in my life where my words had truly mattered and made a difference. I plan to do the same thing with this blog.
